What Are the Parts of an Autogas Setup?

Propane is referred to as autogas when used as a source of fuel for vehicles. Choosing propane instead of gasoline or diesel has several benefits including helping you save money in the long run. Propane also provides clean energy and can help save the environment. In fact, propane is the leading alternative fuel source for many businesses and fleet vehicles around the nation. Before making the decision to switch to propane autogas, you should become well informed on the process and steps of an autogas setup.

A Complete Propane Autogas Refueling Station Includes The Following Equipment:

  • A large, stable foundation to install the station on (most likely a concrete slab)
  • One or more large, propane fuel tanks
  • Electrical setup
  • Crash protection
  • A fuel pump
  • One or more dispensers with meters

The Standard Process for Autogas Systems Installation Includes:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your propane supplier will hold an initial consultation with you to discuss your specific business needs. This includes the size of the foundation you have available and any traffic flow requirements. You will also discuss how your company is expected to grow in the future.
  2. Timeline Creation: You will work together with the propane supplier to create a timeline for the project and consistency plan. You will split responsibility for the autogas set up. You might be responsible for tasks such as preparing the site or electrical work. An 8 gauge wire will be needed to power around 30 amps.
  3. Permits: At Great Valley Propane, we will make sure any required permits are obtained before installation can begin.
  4. Dispensing System: The solution you are installing also needs to be compatible with the data management system of the propane dispensing station.
  5. Concrete Pad: Now that all the preparation is done, the installation can begin. The first step usually involves installing the concrete pad for the propane tank.
  6. Propane Tank(s): Next, the propane supplier will place the skid and propane tank in the proper position.
  7. Connection to Electrical: After that, the installers will connect the pump and dispenser to the pre-installed electrical system.
  8. Testing and Approval: Next, the propane supplier will test the propane dispenser system by delivering test gas for the propane tank. The test provides enough liquid to test the pump and feel of the vehicle. Hoses, plumbing, nozzles, and pumps should also be checked for safety. This safety check should be repeated twice a year.

Some businesses decide to install an additional canopy to protect their propane vehicle fueling station. The canopy can protect hoses and other propane dispensing equipment from harsh weather and conditions.

Keep in mind, each autogas setup is different and might be larger or smaller than the process mentioned above based on the size of the fleet and business needs.

Rebates Available For Autogas:

Various rebates are available to companies installing new autogas stations and for alternative fuel using vehicles. Some of the rebates include money back towards the installation process and tax credits for fuel used during the year.
