Spring Cleaning – Furnace Filters

After working all winter to keep you warm and comfortable, your furnace, particularly your furnace filters, need some attention. Now’s the time to check the filters before they are totally clogged with hair, dust and other particles circulating in your environment.

Not doing so will result in a very dusty home and poor indoor air quality. And it’s not just poor air quality.  You’ll see higher energy bills now and, down the road, your furnace will be at greater risk of breaking down because of heating system overload.

Try the following tips to give your furnace filters a boost:

  • Create a shoe-free policy – About 80 percent of household dust enters the house on shoe bottoms, so adopting a shoe-free rule is a great place to start if you want to keep dust under control. Don’t forget to put a basket of various size slippers or slipper socks at the front door for guests.
  • Place a mat inside and outside every entry way – This way your guests will have a place to wipe their feet before entering your space. Be sure to clean and shake out the mats frequently.
  • Get out the vacuum – Use your vacuum (preferably one with a HEPA-filter) to go over carpeted areas as well as other surfaces such as hardwood or tile flooring.  Vacuum each room thoroughly once a week; go over high-traffic areas twice a week.
  • Put away the feather duster – Instead, use a damp microfiber cloth to get rid of the dust. Feather dusters just push dust around.
  • Consider hiring a professional duct cleaning company – The professionals will clean out your system and remove any clogs or excessive amounts of dust, debris and/or particles that could potentially be released into the home from your supply registers.
  • Service your furnace – Dust could be a sign that your furnace isn’t running as efficiently as it should be – or that your ductwork isn’t moving air the right way. If you’re noticing a lot more dust than usual, it’s probably time for a professional maintenance check or clean & tune by a trained service technician.

Keep the dust down this spring: Check your furnace air filter once a month to avoid unnecessary repairs and premature heating system breakdowns.
